cBCS Week 9

Austin is back from Austin and is once again behind the reigns of the Top Ten this week. Sorry I had to leave you all in the hands of the baby sitter. I hope we didn't lose too many readers in one week.

cBCS Top 10
This Week: vs. Penn State
Reason: Ohio State fans should not worry too much about this week's home match up against Penn State. Ohio State only chokes in national spotlight games against non-conference opponents. COUGH, USC, COUGH, LSU, COUGH, FLORIDA, COUGH. Sorry, I just Ohio Stated... I mean, choked.

This Week: @ LSU
Reason: Why was Geogria so hyped up before their game against Alabama and then forgotten about after. Sure it was an ugly loss, but that's their only blemish on their schedule thus far. Don't worry, Bulldogs. We got your back!

8. USC (*)
This Week: @ Arizona
Reason: Isn't it about time for another USC upset? They are usually good for about two each season. But on a serious note, it would be absolutely pathetic if USC doesn't go through the rest of the Pac 10 undefeated.

This Week: @ Kansas
Reason: Is Texas Tech as good as everyone makes them out to be? Well, they haven't slipped up yet. So as of right now, yes. Pretty soon their defense and lack of a run game will come back to HAUNT them. (You like the play on words with Halloween coming up?)

This Week: @ Texas
Reason: Note to Oklahoma State fans: Take it from me, if you plan on making the trip down to Austin, like I did last weekend, be prepared for a bunch of (for a lack of a better term) douche fans.

This Week: vs. Kentucky
Reason: This is one of those SEC games where you'll fall asleep while watching it.

This Week: @ Kansas State
Reason: This is one of those Big 12 games where you'll fall asleep while watching it.

3. ALABAMA (*)
This Week: @ Tennessee
Reason: Alabama dominates in the national games they play in (i.e. Clemson, Georgia). Alabama does not dominate in all of their other games (i.e. Kentucky, Ole Miss). This would make Tennessee's season to upset the Crimson Tide in Knoxville. Be careful, Bama.

This Week: @ Ohio State
Reason: Penn State beat Michigan for the first time since 1996. They haven't gone undefeated since 1994. They haven't won a National Championship since 1986. And they haven't won in Columbus since 1978. For any of these other feats to be accomplished this year they must win in Columbus this weekend. Then it should be smooth sailing for the Nittany Lions.

1. TEXAS (*)
This Week: vs. Oklahoma State
Reason: Colt McCoy's performance this season can be summed up in three words: Re, Dic, and Ulous! The guy puts up better numbers in games then other quarterbacks do in practice. Heck, he puts up better numbers than Zach does in video games. Then again, who doesn't?

Other Week 9 Notes
From A to Z:
  • Why the heck is USC so high on everyone's polls? (Including ours.) Has everyone forgotten their loss to Oregon State?
  • If you were to take a look at Joe Paterno's career, you would think he were getting older. But if you were to take a look at his life, you would see how much of a stereotypical old man he is. The man broke his hip two weeks ago.
  • Looks like asking Tommy Bowden to step down really turned Clemson's season around for the better. They fell under .500 last week by losing to unranked Georgia Tech, 21-17. Tommy was probably able to sleep a little better after knowing that.
  • The defending Orange Bowl Champion Kansas Jayhawks seem to be having a little more trouble this year then they did last year. It's funny what a difference a year makes. Playing the top Big 12 South teams as opposed to Baylor, Highland Park High School (Topeka, KS), The Little Giants, and Brandon Woods Retirement Home's Intramural Squad can really make a difference in a team's record and season outcome.
  • It's a good thing BYU was knocked out of our top ten, because we were running out of Mormon football jokes.

Week 6
Underdog Picks
The records are back to even after Austin's pick failed him by one touchdown in a close game to give Austin his first wrong choice of the season. Zach made a great pick with TCU dominating BYU.
(Rankings are AP.)

Zach (3-1)
Louisville over #14 South Florida

Austin (3-1)
Tennessee over #2 Alabama

• • •

1. Colt McCoy - Quarterback - Texas
Reason: 81% Completion Percentage - The dude is so cold, chicken soup won't help!
2. Sam Bradford - Quarterback - Oklahoma
Reason: Even in their loss to Texas, he still threw 5 touchdowns.3. Javon Ringer - Running Back - Michigan State
Reason: Ole Javon already has close to 1,200 yards on the season. Has anyone even noticed?4. Daryll Clark - Quarterback - Penn State
Reason: 152.73 Passer Rating and he is the biggest reason why Penn State is undefeated thus far...
5. Chase Daniel - Quarterback - Missouri
Reason: Let's not forget about Mr. Daniel. In their two ugly losses, Chase has thrown for over 700 yards and 75% completion rate.
Other Notables:
  • David Johnson - QB - Tulsa: 2300 yards passing, 31 TD's passing, and a 212 passer rating
  • Graham Harrell - QB - Texas Tech: Has yet to slip up yet while throwing for 2700 yards so far.
  • Jeremy Maclin - WR/KR - Missouri: The kid is the explosive spark Missouri needs to get back in the Big 12 North hunt.

cBCS Week 8

Disclaimer: Huff has jumped ship to go to Austin leaving Zach to publish the rankings this week, so buckle up because you are in for a treat.

cBCS Top 10

10. Georgia
This week: vs. Vandy
Reason: Matt Stafford is good. Knowshon Moreno is good. That is good for something. They just lost a starting offensive tackle for the season, and I do love tackles so that will hurt. This weekend will be a good test. They take the 10 spot over Mizzou because the Tigers loss was more recent and to a lower ranked team.

9. Oklahoma State
This week: vs. Baylor
Reason: They looked good on Saturday. That was a very impressive win on the road. How often do you see stud quarterbacks get rattled when they are at home. They got in Chase's head which is no easy task. I have only seen it happen a handful of times, and never at home. Baylor is tricky though. This has trap game written all over it. If this team does not get caught looking ahead, they are primed for a great season.

8. USC
This week: @ Washington State
Reason: USC is really good. They have more talent than anyone else in the country. They could easily be playing in Florida come January if Sanchez is healthy and if they can get up for the easy games.

7. Texas Tech
This week: @ Texas A&M
Reason: That Nebraska game was ridiculous. I do not know what happened there. I imagine this team ending the season as the fourth best team in the Big 12 South (which is hella impressive for the conference). That offense has been awesome this year though and they still have not lost, which is the important thing. I think they have hope because of the commercials they made for Harrell and Crabtree for the Heisman. Hilarious.

6. Florida
This week: IDLE
Reason: Although the SEC is no Big 12 (yes Glen, you were right), that win they picked up over LSU was legit. I believe in full disclosure, so let me also say that I am a huge Urban Meyer fan. This ranking might be a little biased, but that is what happens when Huff goes to Austin and I have to do the rankings.

5. BYU
This week: @ TCU
Reason: I really like BYU. You can not find a blemish yet on their season so far. How many teams can say that? This TCU game will be a legit test. If they roll then watch out. It will be real interesting to see if they get a shot to play in the N.C. game if they go undefeated.

4. Oklahoma
This week: Kansas
Reason: They lost, and still looked really scary. That was just an awesome game. I have never seen a team score with so many bizarre touchdowns though. How you lose a game with mojo like that is crazy. Texas just played out of their minds. Losing starting linebacker Ryan Reynolds for the season will make this a little interesting though, because they were already very shallow at linebacker. The defense may be in trouble, and they are playing in the wrong conference to be having those kind of problems.

3. Penn State
This week: Michigan
Reason: They have just rolled all season long. Too bad the Big 10 blows, because I want to see them play somebody legit. Unless they just completely choke, I would say they have the inside track to the N.C. game. It will be interesting to see if a 1-loss Texas or Oklahoma could pass them up come January.

2. Alabama
This week: Ole Miss
Reason: They have been really good this year. I do not know what happened in that Kentucky game, but they need to figure out how to beat crappy teams because they have a lot of them until the conference championship.

1. Texas
This week: Mizzou
Reason: They won the game of the season last week. That was an incredible game. Colt McCoy has really found his stride as a quarterback. He made all the throws he had do and was able to find to open guy when they needed him. It is a fact that Texas has some of the best talent around, it is just a matter of whether or not Mack Brown can get these boys to play.

More Stuff:

  • We have been getting slammed by some of our readers, bringing accusations that our upset alerts are lame. Oklahoma was a 7 point favorite over Texas. If that is not an upset then I do not know what one is. We are not going to pick stupid upsets for the sake of picking upsets. The criteria is games where we think a legitimate favorite could go down. If you want me to just make uneducated predictions (like my K-State pick over Tech), then you are just going to have to go somewhere else. These are upsets, not blockbuster poll shattering picks. The best way to do that is to just pull names out of a hat and see if you get lucky.
  • Last week we said that if the Irish pulled off the road win it would be safe to say they are back. Not yet. It will be interesting what BCS bowl game they get this year.
  • It will be interesting to see the Kansas game this weekend. I like the Rutgers comparison courtesy of loyal reader 'imzachosborne'. My prediction is that Mangino is going to be kicking himself if he does not jump ship to a legit program real quick (see Greg Schiano).
  • And since we are talking about Kansas, turns out the fans failed to heed the pleas of Mangino and continued the 'rip is *&$*ing head off" chant before kickoffs, only to get booed by their own alumni section. Classic. Classy.
  • ESPN magazine cover curse perhaps? Also, over under on the Warren Buffet/Chase Daniel picture being shown during Mizzou games for the remainder of the season has been set at 3.5.
  • Remember when Auburn was ranked in the top ten. They have officially hit rock bottom. I would say Tommy Tubberville has to be feeling the heat right now. Turns out that spread offense thingy is not as automatic as some teams make it look.
  • Clemson fired head coach Tommy Bowden this week. They gave him a contract extension in the offseason only to have to pay $3.5 million to see him go. Doh! John Heisman is rolling in his grave.
Underdog Picks

Zach (2-1):

Austin (3-0):

cBCS Week 7

cBCS Top 10

10. USC
This Week: vs. Arizona State
Reason: Every year the Trojans look like the best team in the country in every game except one or two. I think they're done taking games off this year. USC wins big and help people forget about the Oregon State loss.

9. Georgia
This Week: vs. Tennessee
Reason: Georgia's schedule doesn't look that tough anymore with teams like Tennessee on there. The only way Tennessee has a chance of winning this game is if Georgia doesn't show up. But even then, Tennessee will probably still find a way to lose.

8. Texas Tech
This Week: vs.  Nebraska
Reason: Texas Tech is looking more and more legit each week. This week they are guaranteed to look better playing the Pink Shirt Defense. Just be careful not to get spit on, Graham Harrell.

7. BYU
This Week: vs. New Mexico
Reason: We're running out of Mormon jokes. But BYU has no chance of losing this week. Enough said.

6. LSU (*)
This Week: @ Florida
Reason: An LSU defensive tackle made claims earlier this week that he wants to take Tebow out. Well, go ahead. Tebow hasn't showed up all season for the Gators. It won't make LSU's chances of winning the game any higher.

5. Penn State (*)
This Week: @ Wisconsin
Reason: In their past few games, Wisconsin has been putting the "BAD" in BADGERS while Penn State has been putting the "CAN'T BE STOPPED" in NITTANY LIONS. However, Penn State has struggled pretty bad on their last two trips to Wisconsin.

4. Texas
This Week: @ Oklahoma (in Dallas)
Reason: Texas, whatever you do don't try and ford the Red River. Whenever I used to do that my oxen would always die. Oxen are longhorns. I think it's a sign.

3. Alabama
This Week: IDLE
Reason: Beating an unranked Kentucky team 17-14 at home didn't really do it for us at Corked Bats to keep the Tide in our #2 spot. But good news for Bama fans, Auburn is terrible.

2. Missouri (*)
This Week: vs. Oklahoma State
Reason: Austin played a dynasty with Missouri on XBox 360 over the summer. The only team he lost to in the regular season was Oklahoma State at home. That leads us to believe this will be a darn good game under the lights in Missouri. But how funny would it be if Missouri won big and we got to see another irate temper tantrum from head coach, Mike Gundy! He's a man! He's 40! (Well, 41 now...)

1. Oklahoma (*)
This Week: vs.Texas (in Dallas)
Reason:  If OU can find a way to survive against Texas, an Oklahoma National Title may come 'Sooner' rather than later. Insert rim shot here.

Other Week 6 Notes
From A to Z:
  • More Roasting of Auburn. This week the SEC Powerhouse fired Tony Franklin, their offensive coordinator, who they just hired this past off season. Yeah, I'm sure he's the reason the Auburn Tigers have looked like a powder puff football team against big programs like Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.
  • More on crappy SEC teams... the Tennessee Volunteers continue to impress. They had a really convincing 13-9 win over Northern Illinois. Wow.
  • Just like we said last week: Chase Daniel and his backup, Chase Patton, are on the cover of ESPN this week.
  • On the topic of Chase Daniel, everyone by now has heard about the pre-game warm up spitting incident with Nebraska last weekend. Huskers head coach, Bo Pelini said he reviewed the tape and didn't see anything like that. Ok, Bo. I'm sure you would be able to see a guy spitting on a tape of pre-game warm ups. Does Nebraska even film pre-game warm ups? Who are they, the New England Patriots?
  • Has anyone checked the SEC East Standings lately? Who's number one? Florida? Georgia? Kentucky? Tennessee? Heck, South Carolina? No. It's the Vanderbilt Commodores. Just thought we would bring that to everyone's attention.
  • Notre Dame has a big test in Chapel Hill this week. If they beat the #22 ranked Tar Heels on the road, we think it's safe to say that the Irish are back.
  • Can anyone still say that Kansas is a good team after their comeback victory over Iowa State? Sure they were down 20-0 at halftime, but a GOOD team would never be down to Iowa State by that much EVER. If Kansas does the same thing against Oklahoma, THEN they are a good team.
  • At least their fans are good. Kansas is making a strong attempt to end their students' chant of "Rip their [expletive] heads off!" from the movie The Waterboy. Obviously, Kansas has got a lot of tradition at their football games.
  • Ohio State beat Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium last week. Was it because of Terrelle Pryor? Was it because Beanie Wells ran for 168 and a score? No. It was because the Wisconsin Band was suspended. That's right, all the tubas, trombones, and drum core dudes were left out of the game last Saturday. How is a team supposed to stay fired up without their fight song being played after each score? And also, that means no 5th Quarter for the Badger faithful. At least it's the band nerds and not the football jocks getting suspended up in Madison.

Corked Bats Week 6
Underdog Picks
Zach got his first loss of the season while Austin stayed alive with his pick of Vandy over Auburn. Zach hopes to even back the score with their picks this weekend.
(Rankings are AP.)

Austin (2-0)
#11 Florida over #4 LSU

cBCS - Week 6

Welcome to October.
Leaves are changing.
The weather is getting chillier.
If your MLB team is still alive, then you are watching two sports.
If you are from Canada, then you are watching preseason hockey.
But if you are a red blooded American, you are currently feeling the excitement of

cBCS Top 10

10. USC
This Week: vs. Oregon
Reason: How could we not? Any team that plays Oregon State on a Thursday night game is going to look like America's biggest upset victim... Ok, so maybe not. USC just looked real bad.

9. Georgia
This Week: IDLE
Reason: What did we say last week? This season isn't getting any easier. Rob Schneider said it best in 'The Waterboy': "Oh No! We Suck Again!"

8. Texas Tech (*)
This Week: @ Kansas State
Reason: Doesn't it feel like it's been 31 years since the Red Raiders have been ranked this high?

7. BYU
This Week: @ Utah State
Reason: These Mormans are on a mission. Not that kind of mission. A mission to get as many wins as their coach has wives. They will probably do it too. BYU could quite possibly make the BCS.

6. LSU
This Week: IDLE
Reason: LSU hasn't moved up because LSU hasn't looked like a top five team. If this year's LSU's football team were a woman, they'd be Maggie Gyllenhal. She seems like a hot woman, but then when you get a closer look, you're like, "Oooo, maybe not."

5. Penn State
This Week: @ Purdue
Reason: C'mon... this is college. And college is all about road trips, right?! Well, Penn State starts off a stint of four of their next five games on the road. Hopefully, the Nittany Lions will have better success than Martin Lawrence had with his College Road Trip. They should, Penn State seems to be the favorite in the Big Ten.

4. Texas (*)
This Week: @ Colorado
Reason: Texas can't take this week off. The Buffalos rock at Folsom Field. Probably better than Dave Matthews. But Colt McCoy is playing great football and as all Texas has to do is get by this week. The can breathe easy knowing they only have to play Oklahoma next week.

3. Missouri (*)
This Week: @ Nebraska
Reason: Bo Pelini said his goal is to shut out Missouri. And our goal is to get someone other than Christine Conklin to read and comment on our blog posts! Like either of those are going to happen! Chyah! Bo Pelini's goal should be to look more like a football coach and not the Russian dude from 'Armageddon'.

2. Alabama
This Week: vs. Kentucky
Reason: Dear, USA... Have you guys realized that the University of Kentucky has the best scoring defense in the country? Because they do. But good news for Tide fans, Kentucky has never won in Tuscaloosa. But after last week, you can never say never in the SEC.

1. Oklahoma
This Week: @ Baylor
Reason: After last week, we are a little skeptical of saying any team is going to go undefeated. However, a Sooner upset is going to have to wait at least one week. Baylor is just a fallen tree stump in the middle of the trail on the way to the Red River.

(*) - On Upset Alert

Other Week 6 Notes
From A to Z:
  • If we produced a top 25 poll, the Auburn Tigers would not be on it. They are not a good team.
  • The only reason Missouri is on upset alert is because Brandon Lucky said that Mizzou should watch out because they're "angry right now."
  • Speaking of Missouri, look for Chase Daniel and backup QB, Chase Patton (that's right), on the next cover of ESPN the Magazine.
  • This far into the season, the Big 12 is playing the best football. Sorry, SEC... looks like your reign is coming to an end.
  • ESPN's College GameDay is in Nahville, Tennessee for the first time ever. The bigger suprise will be if Vanderbilt produces more fans then Auburn at the set.

Corked Bats Week 6
Underdog Picks
We're not going to lie, we are pretty happy after last week's underdog picks. So this week we put a lot more discussion, debate, and thought into our picks to keep our hot streak up. Rankings are AP.

Zach (1-0)
Kansas State over #7 Texas Tech

Austin (1-0)
#19 Vanderbilt over #13 Auburn
